Day 11: Your funeral song

Kings of Leon – Arizona

I’ve had this earmarked as my funeral song since almost the first time I heard it so this was always going to be an easy topic. I’m not suggesting I think too in depth about my conduit to the afterlife but most of my family and closet friends probably would’ve heard me rant about this being played at my funeral at some point or another. Guess I’m kind of lame like that…

Anyway, despite the morbid association you can now share with me to this song it’s obvious to see why it would be pertinent for a funeral. It’s hauntingly mellow, slow and melodic without being too suicidal and should hopefully jerk a tear or two (possibly of happiness (I won’t judge)) amongst my friends when I’m gone.

I am possibly [well probably, nay almost definitely] biased in my opinion that some of the most amazing artists and people are those that I know. Now I’m sure everybody knows somebody with ‘talent’ but it’s the individuals who are not only talented at what they do but at who they are that intrigue me. The people that live every day the way they want to live it, not the way others want them to. The people that love what they do and what they create unconditionally, but understand that there is more to ‘it’ than just that.

So whenever I get around to it I’m going to write about how much these people mean to me and how much I appreciate having them in my life.

Day 10: A song that represents/describes you

Girl Talk – Jump Around

Ok so this is a bit of a weird but rad selection I think.

I thought it would be appropriate to pick a Girl Talk mash because it kind of represents me as well as my taste in music. While I suppose I predominantly listen to more “indie” tunes, a huge slice of my music comes from hip-hop and RnB with other influences in hardcore, pop, dance and every other genre/ random sub-genre. I am a very multifarious person (cough* thank you Microsoft Word synonyms function). I like a lot of different things, I do a lot of different things and at times don’t know exactly who/what I am so it seemed fitting to summarize my personality with a Girl Talk track too.

From here my only thought process was ‘which Girl Talk mash’ – easy: Jump Around. Again, allow me to elaborate… This mix features Creep by Radiohead (don’t look into that too much) and the chorus of Skee-Lo’s I Wish; and that probably sums me up better than any other individual song I can think of. All except the bit about the ’64 Impala anyway ‘cos Cars are lame as shit. Don’t read too heavily into that line, it’s just there to maintain the flow…

I wish I was a little bit taller,

I wish I was a baller,

I wish I had a girl who looked good,

I would call her,

I wish I had a rabbit in a hat with a bat

And a ’64 Impala.

Day 9: A song you can fall asleep to

Sigur Ros – Salka

It’s tough to dedicate one song to fall asleep to because unless you’re some kind of superhero getting to sleep will generally take longer than the average three and half to four minute length of a track. So I think it’s more fitting to have included an album to fall asleep to; that being Sigur Ros’Hvarf-Heim (from which Salka is obviously taken). A gorgeous two-disc album, the music is so surreal and relaxing that you become immersed in the Icelandic experience, in the darkness of your after-hours solidarity otherwise known as ‘sleep’.

Sigur Rós – Salka

Ps. I have the same Radiohead ‘OK Computer’ poster up in her room at the beginning of the clip. My brother gave it to me along with some other choice merch on my 18th I think… I won’t blame you if you don’t watch the entire clip but please ensure you let it play through in the background for its entirety.
