Summer vacation 2011. Destination: Gold Coast. Fortunately the week i spent up there didn’t coincide with the ridiculous amounts of water falling all over the state. As of today, half of Brisbane is underwater so we metaphorically ‘got in, got off and got out’ before all of the chaos erupted.

Our summer holidays are generally filled with nothing but beach, bball, pool, dinner and shopping. A perfect way to enjoy the first week of a promising new year and this trip was thankfully no different. Note: In some cases, holiday monotony is unbearable, but when it comes to the aforementioned activities that is really not an issue.

The most prominent attraction, at least for AJ, Joey and I, was the prospect of a day in Brisbane (City & Valley) because up until this point, there had been a diminutive amount of shopping experiences (a trip to Pac Fair which resulted in a discounted Country Road shirt from DJ’s and some vintage A.Rocca t-shirt purch). “Mum is going to kill me, she was hassling me about having no room in my wardrobe for tees before I left and I just bought another 5” (Rocca, A 2011).

The day went a little something like this.

Stop 1: Culture Kings (CBD)

A favourite from last year, Culture Kings provide a vast array of Basketball and American culture to their customers. With a hair parlour upstairs for trendy cuts and a cap wall spanning the entire length of the shop, it’s obvious why these cats are the (self-appointed) kings of culture. I picked up an Oklahoma City ‘Durant’ jersey and a tight Sacramento snapback.

Stop 2: Hype DC (CBD)

Rocca picks up a safe pair of maroon low-cut’s he’s been searching all over the country for. Dealing with the intensity of the dubstep they were rocking mallside was also an experience. Hype employees must seriously be shelving daily to deal with that in the workplace.

Stop 3: Combined (Fortitude Valley)

I’ve heard a bunch of places in the valley are currently flooded, for the sake of these guys I hope that they were prepared and haven’t been hit too hard because the stock they were running…oh my. Check the snaps of some of the estab’s features; seriously my kind of store. Picked up a sweet lazyoaf snap-up jumper.

Stop 4: The Valley Streets

We finished the trip by trekking round The Valley gazing into windows and flicking through racks (no, we did not go to a brothel I am referring to clothing racks… but only because Mum and Joey were with us) before slamming it back down the freeway for dinner at Cav’s Steak House. Brilliant. Tradition is great, especially when it’s traditionally somebody else’s shout on mad rump, medallion and t-bone. Cheers Bob…

the introduction of vans vault’s spectator lx. these have just been released for the fall/winter (northern hemisphere) season and are sure to be a hit with their twentieth century suede/ leather look.

while on the topic of vans, i was thinking about a brief encounter i had with a fellow patron (i use the word patron very generously as this guy was a genuine stain) in the toilets of an adelaide venue not long ago. i was busying myself at the trough when i was interrupted by a ”nice shoes” comment from my right. i turned to see the source looking down at my shoes, then eagerly back to his and again to mine. i rolled my eyes and in an obviously condescending tone muttered ”you too champ” as he was also wearing a pair of vans, albeit in another colour. he obviously missed the relevance of my tone and assumed we had just established an unspoken affinity toward each other solely (excuse the pun) on the basis of our shoes. he proceeded to talk to me about how he owned six pairs of vans, all different colours and was lining up another purchase at his quote; ‘new favourite store: midwest trader’.

in a separate conversation (thank god) with john and dan, we were talking about how vans have become the new converse; in that seventy percent of the world owns a pair but somehow still believe they are original in their ownership of them. let’s hope that these new vans vaults don’t slide down that path too because i’m really digging them and would hate to have to endure another conversation, mid-flow, in regards to their origin…

photographic evidence implementing one, aaron jay rocca, in the act of mixing his denims with sneakers. just a despicable showing on his behalf, i’m embarrassed i was in the room to capture his fall from grace. <side bar: happy birthday for yesterday champ> if you witness such acts of debauchery i implore you to not sit idly by and snigger at your obvious superiority, but to call the person out on their error of judgment in the hope that we may, one day, find a utopian place, freed of this weight being placed on our society.
